ON BIENNIALS/TUTTO SULLE BIENNALI

On biennials/Tutto sulle biennali is the first festival dedicated to international contemporary art and its protagonists.

Over the last twenty years biennials have clearly become fundamentally important in terms of the production and popularisation of contemporary art.  They now provide the ideal situation for art to come into contact with the production of knowledge.  The festival of Contemporary art aims to provide an in-depth analysis of these institutional forms and their effect on the understanding of art and its place in contemporary culture.

By now, biennials are becoming events which go beyond the contemporary art system, and instead are increasingly depicted as moments in the collective global imagination.  The festival of Contemporary art cannot ignore the relationship that this progressive expansion has established with society and with visitors to cultural events, who are no longer just experts, but also enthusiasts.

Pier Luigi Sacco

Biennials have become a place where the public meets works of art and the artworks meet each other.  Before entering a museum, a work of art is usually presented in one of these “mega-exhibitions” which are increasingly numerous and receive press coverage which shows no signs of diminishing.  They provide a fundamental opportunity for establishing a relationship between the public and works of art, and it is therefore very important to understand this relationship and to find the key for the public to understand the “language” of the work.  In order to do this, however, we need to find the key for the public to understand the “language” of these exhibitions as a whole.
